Kitzbühel – the chamois town close by
Kitzbühel is only a few kilometres from Brixen im Thale and one of the best-known places in the Alps. The medieval old town with its colourful façades, cafés and small shops makes a stroll a real experience – and all around are mountains with a great history.
Getting there: relaxed by bus & train
With the Brixental guest card you travel free of charge on the Wörgl – Kitzbühel regional bus and on ÖBB trains on the Wörgl – Hochfilzen line. From Brixen im Thale station the train takes you straight to Kitzbühel – without looking for a parking space in town.
Experience the Streif on foot
In winter the World Cup stars race down here; in summer you can hike the famous downhill run:
- Start: Hahnenkammbahn top station (1,662 m), also home to the Streif museum in the start house
- Route: trail no. 26 along the race course, past the legendary Mausefalle
- Length: 8.4 km, around 930 metres of descent, 2.5 to 3 hours
- Finish: valley station in Kitzbühel (761 m)
Technically the path is easy, but the steep sections are hard on the knees – poles help.
Kitzbüheler Horn & Hornköpflsee
On the other side of the valley the Horngipfelbahn takes you up the Kitzbüheler Horn with the Gipfelhaus and Alpenhaus. A detour to the Hornköpflsee, which shines turquoise in the sun, is worthwhile.
Schwarzsee
The moor lake on the edge of town is ideal for a walk or a swim with a view of the Wilder Kaiser. More in the article Swimming lakes & pools.
If the weather does not play along
- Aquarena: leisure pool in the centre with pools, saunas and slides
- A stroll through the old town with a break in one of the coffee houses
- Wildpark Aurach south of the town – lovely for families
