A winter holiday without skis
Not everyone in the family or group skis – and skiers also enjoy a day off. Winter hiking is the most beautiful way to get to know the Brixental: crunching snow, clear mountain air and views across the whole valley to the Kitzbühel Alps.
Right from the farm
The Ottenhof is located on the Sonnberg above Brixen im Thale. From here you can simply set off: the paths around the Sonnberg lead across snowy meadows and past old farmhouses, with a view of the valley. We are happy to tell you at breakfast which paths are cleared and easy to walk.
Up high: Hochbrixen in winter
The Hochbrixen gondola takes you straight from Brixen im Thale to around 1,300 metres. At the top you can expect a panorama, sunshine – and in winter the Alpeniglu village, a village made of snow and ice that is well worth a visit. Huts such as the SkiWelt Hütte Hochbrixen invite you in. Make sure you only walk on signposted winter paths and do not cross ski pistes on foot.
Guided winter hikes
The Kitzbüheler Alpen – Brixental tourist board offers guided hikes in its activity programme – you can get the current winter programme at the tourist office. With the Brixental guest card you get discounts on guided hikes and on the children’s and family programme. Registration is usually at a tourist office by 5 pm the day before.
Getting around by bus & train
With the guest card you travel free of charge on the regional buses and ÖBB trains between Wörgl and Hochfilzen. For example, you can start a hike in Kirchberg or Kitzbühel and take the train back in comfort. All guest card benefits
Our tips for safe winter hikes
- Sturdy, waterproof boots with a good tread – microspikes help on ice.
- It gets dark early in winter: plan to be back before dusk.
- Stay on marked and cleared winter paths; away from them the avalanche bulletin applies.
- Children in a carrier? With the guest card there is a free child carrier against a deposit at the tourist offices.
And to warm up afterwards: the Glühbirnstadl at the farm is open daily in the winter season. To the Glühbirnstadl
